Show committees may deem additional rules necessary. Please feel free to contact the Pacific Southwest District Photography Committee for any help you would like. These are minimal basic rules.
RULES FOR PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITORS
By awarding Pacific Southwest District Photographic Excellence awards, Show Committees agree to abide by these basic rules. The Pacific Southwest District Photography Committee is available to help with any questions or concerns.
- Exhibitors need not be members of any rose society.
- All photographs must be the work of the exhibitor, and must be the work of a single exhibitor.
- Exhibitors may enter no more than (specify in the schedule) photographs in any one class, and a photograph may not be entered more than once.
- Previous winning photographs, defined as Best in Class, Best in Section, Best in Show, or Medal Certificate winner in an ARS national, district or local show or first through fourth place in the ARS American Rose magazine contest may not be entered again in a PSWD show
- Rose photographs are to be entered under ARS Approved Exhibition Names.
- Photographs taken with film or digital equipment are equally welcome. Digital enhancements as well as darkroom enhancements are also welcome.
- Photographs may be in color or in black and white, or a combination of color and black and white.
- All photographs are to be mounted and matted.
- Outside dimensions of the mat are to be 11” x 14”. Orientation may be landscape or portrait.
- Color of the mat is at the discretion of the exhibitor.
- The Photography Classification and Placement Committee will place all photographs in the show. (Recommended, but not mandatory). Non-matted photographs will not be accepted for either judging or display.
- Photographs may be no smaller than 5” x 7” and no larger than 8” x 10”. Non-standard shapes are welcome (e.g., oval, diamond, triangle, etc.), as long as the mat opening fits within the largest acceptable 8” x 10” opening and is not less than the smallest acceptable 5” x 7” opening
- The Show Committee will furnish entry tags that must be filled out completely by the exhibitor. (The PSWD Photography Committee is still working on a design for these). The exhibitor may place nothing identifying the photographer on the front of the photograph.
- Photography Judges and their immediate family members may enter their photographs in the Judges Section only.
- Horticulture and Arrangement Judges may enter photographs in any of the Sections except Budding Photographers.
- A Show Committee may require preregistration. (Specify in your schedule, with contact information, deadline date.)
- A Show Committee may set times for acceptance of photographs. This may include accepting entries both before and the day of the show. (Specify in your schedule)
- Judges may ask the clerk to pick up a photo, if necessary, to adequately view the photo. Under no circumstances however, is a photo to be turned in such a way as to show the exhibitor’s name or any other identifying information.
- The Show Committee will make every effort to have a Photography Judging Team composed of an ARS Accredited Horticulture Judge, an ARS Accredited Arrangement Judge, and one or two highly experienced photographers. (Recommended until we have our own accredited photography judges)
- The Show Committee will exercise due caution in protecting all exhibits, but neither the (Local) Rose Society, the ARS, the Pacific Southwest District, nor the (facility where show is being held) will assume any liability in loss or damage to property.
In our schedules, the section on "Causes for Disqualification" should be replaced by
These Photographs Will Be for Display Only (and only if there is room) and Will Not Be Judged:
We request that you not enter these photographs.
• Photographs which do not have properly completed “Photo Entry Form” taped to the back of the photo (or whatever alternative the sponsoring society has designated until we have developed an 'official' entry tag).
• Photograph not mounted.
• Photograph previously a winner, defined as Best of Show, Best of Section, Best of Class, or Certificate winners in ARS national, district, or local shows, or first though fourth place winners in the ARS American Rose magazine contest
• Any identifying text or other material identifying the photographer placed by the photographer on the front of the photograph.
• An unmatted photograph will not accepted for either judging or display.
Although we no longer have causes for disqualification, Classification and Placement Committees are not required to accept any of the above photographs if there is not room for display after properly entered photographs are displayed.
Until we have our own trained and accredited Rose Photography judges, the committee asks Show Committees who wish to give PSWD Awards at their shows to include one or two ARS accredited Horticulture and/or Arrangement judges and at least one experienced photographer on each photography judging team. These are some of the ways to define an "experienced photographer"
1. holds a business license as a photographer
2. earns money as a photographer
3. has had work accepted in juried art shows
4. has had work shown in solo or group art exhibitions
5. holds a degree in Photography
6. holds a professional-level Certificate in Photography from a community college, junior college, or continuing education program
We have a few accredited Horticulture and/or Arrangement judges who meet one or more of these criteria, and their expertise should be used whenever possible. However, there will be times when experienced photographers from within the community will need to be asked to participate on judging teams. We think it is extremely important to include an experienced photographer on the judging team. At the same time, it is important for all to understand that the Score Card, which places equal weight on the rose, rose arrangement, rose garden, etc., and photographic merit, is to be used when any disagreement about any photograph aises.
3. THE SECTIONS AND CLASSES
A show committee is not required to use all sections and classes. Within a section, classes may be combined. For example, a show committee may have a section “Gardens,” but not separate classes for private and public gardens. If you have any questions about using this Master Schedule, please contact the Pacific Southwest District Photography Committee, and we will be happy to work with you to meet your needs.
