October 16, 2011 - Announcement
This site contains the work of the Pacific Southwest District Photography Committee from its inception in the summer of 2008 through the summer of 2011, when an American Rose Society Photography Committee was appointed, charged with developing guidelines for Photography at the national level.
Until ARS Guidelines are in place, we will continue to use the Master Schedule and Score Card here in the PSWD. Show chairs from elsewhere may freely use what you find here.
Changes will undoubtedly be made as the ARS Committee does its work. Pending those Guidelines, we do not plan to make further changes to the PSWD Photography Guidelines.
It has been extremely gratifying to see the interest in Photography grow in all of our shows in the last three years. With the appointment of an ARS Photography Committee, that interest should grow even more.

We have added a Novice Section.
We have now added a Novice Section for new rose photography exhibitors.
We Have a Blog!
For almost two years we have been hard at work writing a photography schedule for use in rose shows that wished to have Photography as a separate Division. Fine tuning that schedule will be ongoing for some time.
We have reached a point, however, where we need to think about offering workshops and seminars, both for our judges and our exhibitors. We need a means for two-way communication. We need a place for online teaching modules. A blog seemed a good place to begin.
Please visit the blog frequently, and leave comments. We will take them seriously.

The Pacific Southwest District of the American Rose Society Photography Committee
With the leadership and encouragement of Kreg Hill, District Director of the Pacific Southwest District of the American Rose Society, the formation of a Photography Committee was formally approved at the District meeting in Palm Springs in November of 2009. The committee had been working informally since July of 2008, with a goal of developing a schedule and guidelines for Photography as a separate division in our rose shows. The underlying philosophy is that Rose Photography is an artistic pursuit, deserving of more than a place in a Class or Section within the Horticulture Division in our rose shows.
Our mission is to promote photography of the rose as an artistic pursuit; to share with the public the rose in its most perfect phase of possible beauty; and to encourage wider participation by offering a different way exhibitors to show their roses.
This is work that will be ongoing for years. Each time a show committee uses the schedule, a work-in-progress, we see more things that need to be changed, clarified, and added.

This site is planned to be a resource center for show committees looking to expand Photography offerings in their shows; rosarians who want to expand their knowledge of rose photography, and news of what the committee is doing.
Please feel free to contact susan@pswdphotography.com, or any of the committee members (we'll have a directory in a bit. Please give us a little time - thanks).
The Working Master Schedule
The committee has developed a working master schedule for show committees to use if they wish. We tried to include a range of Sections and Classes, knowing that many shows would choose to omit some of these classes and sections. We wanted to be very inclusive, knowing that some shows would use a much smaller number of classes.
We have developed guidelines for judging rose photographs, and a score card. We would ask that show committees that wish to give District Awards follow these guidelines. Please feel free to contact the committee if you have questions.
One version of this schedule will be used at the 2010 District Convention in Tucson in April, and another at Albuquerque in June. I'm sure changes will be made after each of those shows, so be sure to check back for revisions. We will make new links available each time a revision is approved.
Show committees may download or copy and paste any parts of the schedule that they find useful. We would appreciate a note that the schedule comes from the Pacific Southwest District of the American Rose Society Committee on Photography, and a link to this site, www.pswdphotography.com. Thanks.
Rose societies, rose information, and rose photography sites may also link to the page.
Using the Schedule in Your Shows
We would like to see Photography added as a separate division in our rose shows, and in as many locations as possible.
The Photography Committee is ready to help you with any questions you may have about using the schedule. If you wish to give PSWD Awards, we request that you submit the schedule for final approval (as is done now for Horticulture and Arrangement schedules).
Please contact susan@pswdphotography.com for any questions.
Send Us the Link to Your Photography Schedule, and We'll Post It on this Site
If you send us a link to your Photography show schedule, we'll post it here. You would be helping us make this a central site for information for people looking for rose shows in which to enter photographs. Hopefully, that would also boost entries at your show. Win-win-win situation!
